How Our Skin Changes as We Transition from Summer to Autumn

As the seasons shift from summer to autumn, our skin goes through its own seasonal changes. Just like we swap our shorts for jumpers and boots, our skin has to adjust to new weather conditions. Let’s look at how and why our skin changes from summer to fall—and how we can keep it looking and feeling healthy. 

Summer Skin: Sun, Sweat, and Oil 

During the summer, our skin is exposed to more heat, humidity, and sunshine. (on a good week, England summers aren’t the most reliable!!!) Regardless, here’s what typically happens: 

More Oil Production
: The heat causes our skin to produce more oil, which can make our skin feel greasy and often lead to more breakouts. 

Sweat
: We sweat a lot more when it’s hot, especially if we’re outdoors. While sweat helps cool us down, it can also clog our pores, causing irritation or acne. 

Sun Exposure
: More hours of daylight means more exposure to the sun’s UV rays. Sunlight gives us that healthy vitamin D, but too much of it can lead to sunburn, sunspots, and long-term damage such as wrinkles.

On the plus side, summer’s humidity helps keep our skin hydrated, so it often looks plump and dewy.
 

Autumn Skin: Cooler, Drier, and More Sensitive 

As autumn sets in, temperatures drop and the air becomes drier. These changes can have a noticeable effect on your skin: 

Dryness
: Cooler air holds less moisture than warm air, which can dry out your skin. You might notice your skin feeling tighter, or it may become flaky or rough. 

Increased Sensitivity
: When your skin loses moisture, it weakens the skin’s natural barrier, making it more sensitive to things like wind, indoor heating, and even certain skincare products. This can lead to redness or irritation. 

Dullness: Without enough moisture, your skin can start to look dull as dead skin cells build up. You might lose some of the glow you had during the summer. 

Why Does Skin React to Seasonal Changes? 

Your skin is your body’s first line of defense against the outside world, and it’s constantly adapting to protect you. When the environment changes, like when temperatures drop or humidity levels fall, your skin has to adjust. 

In autumn, cooler air pulls moisture from your skin, and indoor heating can make it worse by drying out the air inside. Because the shift from hot and humid to cool and dry happens quickly, your skin doesn’t always have time to catch up, which is why we often see more dryness and irritation during this time. 

 

How to Care for Your Skin in Autumn 

Luckily, there are simple changes you can make to help your skin stay healthy and comfortable as the seasons change: 

Switch to a Richer Moisturizer: In autumn, your skin needs extra hydration. Look for moisturizers with ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin to help your skin hold on to moisture. 

Gentle Cleansing: Since your skin may be more sensitive in the fall, switch to a gentle, hydrating cleanser, and try to avoid harsh exfoliants that can strip away the skin’s natural oils. I’d recommend avoiding foaming cleansers, as this can strip the skins of natural oils. 

Keep Wearing Sunscreen: Even though it’s cooler, the sun’s UV rays can still damage your skin. Keep using sunscreen daily to protect your skin. Cloudy weather traps pollution, SPF will protect your skin from this. 

Drink Plenty of Water: Staying hydrated from the inside helps keep your skin moisturized, too. 

Use a Humidifier: Indoor heating can dry out the air, so using a humidifier can add moisture back into your home, helping prevent your skin from drying out. 

As the weather changes, your skin changes too. Moving from summer’s warmth to autumn’s coolness can be a bit tough on your skin, but with a few simple adjustments, you can keep your skin looking and feeling its best. By understanding what your skin needs as the seasons change, you’ll be able to maintain that healthy glow all year round.
