YOUR EYE SHAPE HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF IT WITH MAKEUP
Eye shadow tips for your eye shape
Knowing your eye shape can help you work with your features and make your eyes appear bigger if you desire. I’m going to be breaking down the most popular eye shapes and giving you makeup tips for how to emphasize them!
The most common eye shapes are – almond, round, hooded, downturned, upturned, and monolid. In this article, I am going to be covering how to determine your eye shape and what makeup will suit you the best depending on the eye shape you have.
HOODED
If you think your eyes are hooded, you will most likely have these features:
- Deep-set crease with a heavy brow bone
- With age, your eyelid space and minimise and create a hooded appearance
- When your eyes are open, your eyelid isn’t very visible and can be hidden completely by the crease.
By adding thick eyeliner to your upper lash line and then a matte eye shadow to your whole eyelid can help balance out your eye. You could also put a darker colour over the lid and then gradually blend it upwards. This would create a Smokey eye effect which wouldn’t make a more hooded effect.
You shouldn’t place dark pigments anywhere other the lid as this can may the eye appear more hooded. You could add a lighter pigment with a shimmer instead which would open up your eyes more.

UPTURNED
If you think you have upturned eyes, you will most likely have these features:
- The outer corners of the eyes turning upwards and lifting higher than your inner corner
- Can give the eye a ‘cat eye look’ which can also be imitated with eyeliner however you will naturally have this look
By adding eyeliner to your lower and upper lash line, you can balance out your eye shape. If you want to emphasise it, bring your eyeliner into a flick on the upper lash line. This eye shape is what many people try to create the illusion of if they have another eye shape such as round by adding cat wings as it lifts the eye up. It’s a very youthful eyeshape to have as it lifts the eye upwards instead of making it

ALMOND
If you think you have almond eyes, you will most likely have these features:
- Longer eyelids which tend to be slightly smaller. Comes to a point at each end of the eye.
- The edges on the top and bottom of the cornea is usually hidden by the lids.
- An obvious crease in the lid.
To emphasis your eye shape, use a darker colour in the outer half of your eye and also the crease and then apply a light colour onto the rest of the lid. You could also apply a thicker eyeliner onto your lower lid which will also emphasise your eye shape.

MONOLID
If you think you have monolid eyes, you will most likely have these features:
- A hidden eyelid, it creates a less obvious crease and the crease which covers the eyelid is often referred to as a ‘smooth eyelid’.
- Commonly found in Asian women
As there isn’t much eyelid space, you can really focus on the lower lash line, adding colour or a darker shadow. You can also draw on a ‘cut crease’ by slowly building up shadows and lighter colours – it takes practice but once it’s mastered it can look great!

ROUND
If you think you have round eyes, you will most likely have these features:
- A more circular appearance and often quite big.
- The outer corners of the eyes join evenly in a round shape instead of pulling more upwards or downwards
By using heavy lashes, you can make the eyes seem bigger and more prominent. Applying lashes just to the top lashes and lengthening the outer lashes can make the eye look longer and less round. You could also just apply individual lashes to the outer corner of your lashes to make the eye appear longer. Applying mascara to the bottom lashes will make the eyes look very awake and prominent. You can also use a dark eyeliner in the waterline to make the eyes appear less round as it’ll make the space between the eyelids look smaller.

DOWNTURNED
If you think you have downturned eyes, you will most likely have these features:
- The outer corner of the eye turns down further than the inner corner.
- The crease can often come down slightly covering the lid to give a hooded effect but not always.
You want to give the effect of a lifted outer corner with someone who has downturned eyes. By doing this, it will give the illusion their eyes are straighter which can really lift the face as result. Bring the liner or shadows out past the eye socket and extend them upwards slightly. You can also apply false lashes and apply them slightly higher on the outer corner if eyeliner is worn to mask the lift. Eyeliner will really help lift the eye if a wing is added. Shaping your eyebrows can also help lift a downturned eye and make the eye area appear more awake. The key to this is having an arch and having the tail of the eyebrow slightly raised and not going lower than it needs to.
